New Jersey Budget Crisis Threatens Trail Access

IMBA and the Jersey Off Road Bicycle Association (JORBA) are asking New Jersey mountain bikers to help reverse possible state park closures. Governor Jon Corzine's proposed budget includes $4.5 million in cuts that will close or partially close many state parks as of July 1, 2008.

JORBA has a strong presence at several state parks, and members volunteered more than 5,500 hours in volunteer trail work in 2007. Closing state parks and forests in 2008 would be devastating to the entire recreation community.

Take Action! Tell Governor Corzine and your state legislators that state park closures are unacceptable.

The Parks at Risk

To be closed: Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Stephens State Park*, High Point State Park, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, Round Valley Recreation Area*, Parvin State Park, Jenny Jump State Forest, Worthington State Forest and Fort Mott State Park.

To be partially closed: Ringwood State Park*, D&R Canal State Park* and Washington Crossing State Park may suffer cuts in facilities or hours of operation.

* Parks with a JORBA presence.

Significant Impact on Trail Access

Without adequate funding, ranger presence is cut dramatically and the safety of trail users can no longer be assured. In response, park superintendents are forced to close the gates. When parks are closed, park police can enforce any closures and limit access to riding opportunities.

State Parks Are Important to Everyone

Whether hiking or walking, riding a horse or a bike, or paddling watercraft, state parks benefit every New Jersey citizen. Any closures would affect the entire community in an adverse way. The mountain biking community needs to take a central role in helping prevent the planned closures.

New Jersey Riding

New Jersey State Parks offer excellent singletrack opportunities.
